#Booktour The Last Empath of Doctsland by Leah Putz

Hello and welcome back to the blog!

Today I'm participating in a book tour for The Last Empath of Doctsland by Leah Putz.

Book Blurb:

A kingdom in danger. A royal family divided by greed. A warrior combining strength with magic.

Lisalya Manyeo is the only known empath left in the small seafaring country of Doctsland, so when they are threatened by their much stronger neighbor, Prince Viktor recruits her help. On their way, he trains her to fight.

Working together despite their very obvious differences, they go behind enemy lines to stir up a rebellion against his step-brother’s tyrannical rule. After initial success in recruiting people to join them, they are captured. Lisalya is gravely injured during interrogation, but Viktor nurses her back to life.

A final battle will determine who will rule, but sacrifices have to be made to defeat the enemy.

Will Lisalya and Viktor be able to overcome the odds stacked against them to save their country from certain destruction?

And now on to my review!

Review:

The Queen has died!

The citizens are a buzz, and the prince is worried.

War is coming.

His right to the throne is being challenged!

The countries of  Bushland and Doctsland came together peacefully with the marriage of Prince Viktors father, the King of Doctsland to his step mother, a princess of Bushland. This union forming a temporary truce. The King has been dead for sometime and now the Queen has died. With her death the Prince fears that there could a be a battle for the throne. A fear that is warranted because the Queen's son, the current King of Bushland, is a tyrant and is making a claim for Doctsland.

There are rumors of a empath in a village outside of the capital, if these rumors are true an empath could help Viktor and Doctsland secure throne and country, while also saving the people of Bushland. So with two of his very best, Prince Viktor sails off in search of her.

Lisalya comes from long line of healers & ancient witches, her bloodline is powerful and she is the first empath in hundreds of years. She can sense emotions, find people, and physically feel other's pain. A cut on someone's leg, is felt as if she her self had been cut.

The Prince hopes she will help aid him as he travels to Busland to see if the people of that country will side with him to help over throw it's King before the King can destroy even more of Busland and do the same to Doctsland.

The Last Empath of Doctsland is a debut fantasy novel that could be marketed to both adult and young adult readers. It's a quick read, as it's a shorter read but it is also a fast moving book story wise. The events take place over a handful of months and they move quickly from one event to an other with not a lot of downtime. With that being said we still see moments of bonding and friendship. The story is very character driven and with less emphases on world building. Which given that it isn't an overly big book makes sense. I really like the friendships in this story, I also love that there is LGTBQ+ rep as well. I won't lie there were moments when I felt things were a little rushed in certain parts, and I felt that a certain character shouldn't have been able to do certain things, which why the rating is 3.5 rather than 4.

Keep in mind reading is subjective and what works for one person might not for the other and vice versa.

BUT with that being said over all I liked the book, both plot and characters and I would read more works written by this author.

About the Author:

Leah Putz has been writing for as long as she can remember. Filling notebooks in school, writing on the scrap paper stolen from her mom’s desk at work, and even producing a short story in 7th grade, distributed to family and friends. She writes almost as often as she reads.

The Last Empath of Doctsland is her first novel. She set out to create a fantasy story featuring the key character types she missed when reading stories in the genre, notably strong women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ characters.

She lives and works in Minnesota, spending her free time either hanging out with her dog Frodo, or travelling as much as possible.

  1. Pacing is always something that matters to me but I'm seeing new and creative uses of pacing lately (like a ton of action right away that slows down toward the end instead of three other way around).
