The Inventor's Secret (Cragbridge hall #1) by Chad Morris

Image
The Inventor's Secret by Chad  Morris My rating: 4 of 5 stars From blurb: Imagine a school in the year 2074 where students don’t read history, but watch it happen around them; where running in gym class isn’t around a track, but up a virtual mountain; and where learning about animals means becoming one through an avatar. Abby and Derick, twins who are about to start their new school year at Cragbridge Hall. A school that is the most prestigious schools around, in the world even. A school that their grandfather founded. You see he's this major Major inventor, creating one of the best inventions to date, the Bridge, it lets you see history as it happens. So for this school you got to be pretty darn special and advanced to get into it. And well for Derick that's nothing he never fails at anything he does. He has the grades. Abby on the other hand, she's pretty much just average. So adjusting to this new life is a little harder on her then others. Now on top of th...

My Little Pony: Pony Tales Volume 1

Image
My Little Pony: Pony Tales Volume 1 by Thom Zahler My rating: 3 of 5 stars Review copy via NetGalley My Little Pony: Pony Tales Volume 1 is a graphic novel that consists of 6 stories, each individual story having a different pony as the focal point. Each story ending with a letter to Princess Celestia with a lesson they have learned. Cute, funny and adorable is what I could call this graphic novel on a whole.BUT that being said it really isn't meant for the younger fans, it is obvious the graphic novel is aimed at the older fan base MLP has, because a child could possibly get a little scared if they understood the meaning of what was said in some of the stories, more specifically the second story, very dark. I enjoyed the stores and the artwork, I would most likely check out more MLP graphic novels in the future. View all my reviews

Broken Beauty (Broken Beauty Novellas #1) by Chloe Adams

Image
Broken Beauty by Chloe Adams My rating: 4 of 5 stars Copy provided by Indie Inked This book contains serious subject matter. How does one survive after being raped? Especially when everyone is telling you lies and telling you to keep quite about it. How do you go on when the person who has violated you is free to go on with their lives while you are too scared to move? Mia is the underage minor of a politician and it's election year so everything that happens to him or his family is in the public eye. So of course when she is drugged and raped by the son of a very important allie of her father it has to be hushed and twisted to shine in the favor of her father. She has been so misguided her whole life, never having anyone really there for her. Brained washed to believe that rape can not lead to pregnancy. She blames all of it on herself, what if she never went that party, what if she never wore that dress. Broken Beauty made me so angry and break my heart at the same ...

Is a Worry Worrying You? by Ferida Wolff, Harriet May Savitz, Marie LeTourneau (Illustrations)

Image
Is a Worry Worrying You? by Ferida Wolff My rating: 5 of 5 stars Is a Worry Worrying You? is a wonderful story filled with silly pictures and situations to help explain to children different kinds of worries they may face and how to get rid of them. This is a book that should be read to all children. Actually adults could learn from it as well. Because we all have worries, it doesn't matter your age. And children unlike most (not all) adults don't understand why they are worrying or how to over come their worrying. I know myself I am a big worrier. I worry about a lot of stuff, stuff that is beyond my control but I just can't help. I'm getting better at it that. But enough about me back to this book. I don't think I can say anything negative about this book even if I tried. I for one will be going out and picking up myself a copy. Because you never know when a worry will be worrying you. :) I received a copy from Tanglewood Press, via Netgalley for revie...

Magic Words From the Ancient Oral Tradition of the Inuit

Image
Magic Words: From the Ancient Oral Tradition of the Inuit by Vanita Oelschlager My rating: 3 of 5 stars Beautifully, beautifully illustrated. The colors just jump off the pages. Magic Words is a poem which has been translated from Inuit, it is very short and simple. But yet it's message and meaning are far from it. The mind is magical and powerful thing. The words and images work tell a story that when you read it over again you see other things that you never saw the first time through it. Great for Pre-K up through primary aged kids. Yellow Crocus by Laila Ibrahim

Image
Yellow Crocus by Laila Ibrahim My rating: 5 of 5 stars First of all a rating, 4.5 stars . So where to begin with this review. This book is wonderful, and deeply moving. Tugging on many many emotions. My heart swelled up and it also broke, my eyes filled with tears but I also smiled. Felt struggle and pain also pride and joy. Pure happiness as well as pure agony. The topic of slavery in the US has also been of interest to me, as a small child one of my favorite books was Freedom Train: The Story of Harriet Tubman , a book that I have read many times and still own today. I have written papers in University about slavery and abolitionism, it should never have happened.   No person should have ever been allowed to own another.  No race, gender, creed, sexual orientation is any better then the other. We are all equal and should be treated as such. But other then a story involving slavery, Yellow Crocus is a coming of age story. The bond and love between 'Lisbeth and...

Carrot by Vanita Oelschlager, Kristin Blackwood (Illustrator)

Image
Carrot by Vanita Oelschlager My rating: 3 of 5 stars Read Now copy via NetGalley What drew me to this book was the big orange cat on the cover, and as a lover of cats (especially orange ones) I just had to check it out. Carrot is a cute little rhyming book about the daily adventures of Carrot the cat. One day she sees a white long haired kitty named Buffy looking rather royal like on a yacht. After spending sometime admiring Buffy she starts to wonder what her life is like and what her own life would be like if she could be Buffy. At first it all seems to be wonderful and exciting, thinking of all the things she could do and see. But after more thought Carrot starts to think of all the things she would miss if she lived in that world rather then her own. This story is a great for teaching children that as much as some other persons life may seem more interesting and better then theirs, things are not always as they seem. And to think about all that they have, that would be mi...

A Plain Death (Appleseed Creek Mystery #1) by Amanda Flower

Image
A Plain Death by Amanda Flower My rating: 3 of 5 stars When Chloe moved to Appleseed Creak to start her new job at the local college she didn't once think she was going to be dropped in to the middle of a murder mystery. The weapon being her car. Who would ever think that by helping an Amish girl on the side of the road would turn into so much craziness. The Amish are suppose to be a simple people right? Well there is nothing simple about this story. A Plain Death is a murder mystery with many twist and turns. A potential love story in the making as well. I enjoy the story, but I never loved it. It was an alright quick read. I felt like there was somethings lacking, and there where too many players involved. But it was enjoyable enough to want to read the next book in the series. I've read a few Amish books now and those more so center around those living with in the church not those who have left the community, so it was interesting to read something from that side...

In Plain View (Valley of Choice #2) by Olivia Newport

Image
In Plain View by Olivia Newport My rating: 3 of 5 stars In Plain View takes up a few months after Accidentally Amish ends. We have Annie living a simple life trying to decide if becoming Amish is for her, or if she is just wanting to do so because of her love for Rufus. Facing the temptations of her former life. And like the first book, the story is split in the past as we follow the lives of the Byler family as they are faced with the Revolutionary War. We also have a little bit of a mystery to uncover, as in the first. Along with other love interests for Rufus making an appearance. I have to admit, as much as I liked book 2 of the Valley of Choice series, I preferred the first book. View all my reviews

A Shimmer of Angels (Angel Sight, #1) by Lisa M. Basso

Image
A Shimmer of Angels by Lisa M. Basso My rating: 4 of 5 stars *Warning spoilers ahead* Ray isn't a normal teenage girl, even though she so desperately wants to be. How normal can you be when you see angels? Or at least you think you do, who knows really after spending three years locked up inside a mental institution. She's starting fresh now, new school, new state, she hasn't seen an angel in forever. Maybe she can finally have a normal life. Until she meets Cam, the new student. Not only is she thinking she's slipping, students are starting to die, by their own hands. Or is something or someone behind it all? This series has a lot of potential, and I mean a lot. We have fallen angels, good vs evil, what probably be a love triangle, but besides that we have a well written young adult novel. The author has done a great job at making a interesting story. I haven't read many books about angels, normally I read vampires, witches, werewolves, etc. I think I mig...

Scrap by Emory Sharplin

Image
Scrap by Emory Sharplin My rating: 4 of 5 stars There is a little town called Hellip, which is part of King Ibis's empire. He is a cruel and hateful man. His time on the thrown seems endless. In this town is a little girl, an orphan named Tucker. Who works as a bakers apprentice, she survives with the help of the other orphans and by stealing things from her work when the baker isn't looking. Her and her fellow orphans sometime pass the time telling stories, a popular one being about the missing daughter of the king and wondering what happened to her.   So dare you sing the rebels tune For his daughters rising soon We dare you sing the rebels tune If his daughters rising soon. One day while working a mysterious woman, Vivian leaves a gift for Tucker and from then on her life as she knew it to be changes. I REALLY liked this book. There where moments that really didn't surprise me but then there where moments where I went wow this story is just great. I was a littl...

True by Erin McCarthy

Image
True by Erin McCarthy My rating: 4 of 5 stars Rory is the good girl, the smart girl. She tends to keep to herself, and sits back and thinks over everything logically. She's the girl that well boys don't really take notice too. So when she tells her roommates that she is still a virgin they decide to take matters into their own hands. Tyler is the metal shirt wearing, tattooed "bad boy" who they think will fill that role as Rory's confidence builder by helping her lose her V card. Except there is more to Tyler then people see, he's smart with so much on his plate. It's easier to let others think of him as just a good time, rather then have them get a peek at what life really is like for him. Until Rory. Studying together they both discover things about the other that no one else sees, or even bothers to look for. I really enjoyed this book. When I got to the end, I had to do a double take and thought "What, that's it? Over?? But but m...

The wolf that did not die at the guardians hands, after the rogue pack murdered her parents. She will never forget that wolf, she will find it and kill it. After the murder of her parents Nexi's life is tossed upside down. Everything that she knew of the world, herself has changed. Not all things are what they seem. There are supernatural beings from the Otherworld who cross over, but to a mere mortal they just appear to look just like every other person. Nexi is connected to these beings in way she could never dream of. Both her real parents are from that world. Her father is a guardian her mother was a witch. Giving her the abilities of both, something that has never happened in the past. The death of her adoptive parents have not been the only murders that have been happening across the country, other people have been killed at the hands (paws?) of other...
