So first of all I just wanted to say that as soon as I closed the book I checked to see if book 2 was even a thing, and yes book 2 Pain of Chaos was published May 14 2021. So I very quickly added it to my Wishlist. So by that alone you know that yes I enjoyed this book.
For a smaller fantasy novel, the book has 360 pages there is A LOT happening. The United Cities of Archania are divided between the upper and lower and as you can probably guess the elite live in the upper. That is where the King and the Church reside. The Church, the Empire of Light led by Mason D'Argio, a magi who has weaseled himself into the ear of the King and the Kingdom. Preaching the one God and that only those such as himself can use magic. Before he arrived those that lived in the United Cites where believers of the 4 gods and the Magi, those with golden eyes were freely allowed to use their abilities. Most of the magi live in the lower cites and now they have to hide for fear of punishment, which most times equals death. North in the Borderlands the warrior tribes are trying to keep things safe from the raiding Barbarians who love to come and pillage villages for the fun of it. Here we have Arden, young mage who doesn't quite know where he should be, he has golden eyes but can't do magic.
The cast of characters are so very well written, the ones you are suppose to like you do and the ones you shouldn't, you really don't. Then there are characters that will surprise you, and I was impressed with the growth of a certain one.
There is so much, that I haven't even touched on in this review. I can't spoil the story for you. We have betrayal, backstabbing, lies and deception. Heartbreak and humor. I had tears fill my eyes more than once. Political intrigue, I love a good political fantasy. Mysterious characters, journeys, rebellion against cult like religions. So if these things call to you then this book is for you.
My jaw at the end of this book dropped so hard, that end. WOW! That ending will leave you in need of the second book. Not want, but need.
I REALLY need the second book, like yesterday.
Look at those tabs.

Let's meet our author: Aaron S. Jones
Born in the area of Birmingham that helped inspire Tolkien’s Middle Earth, Aaron S. Jones grew up with a love of fantasy. Inspired by his father’s interest in Lord of the Rings, Jones caught the fantasy bug and read anything he could get his hands on. Moving to the Middle-East and beginning a teaching career, Jones experienced a different world away from the green of the UK and has been able to mix in his experiences around the world with the time he spends in other worlds to write his debut fantasy novel – FLAMES OF REBELLION.
For fans of JOE ABERCROMBIE, SAMANTHA SHANNON, and JOHN GWYNNE, FLAMES OF REBELLION is the first part of THE BROKEN GODS trilogy.
Great post!
