Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige

Image
Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige My rating: 3 of 5 stars This was much better then I was expecting based on ratings I looked at. Enjoyable but never screamed out to me to keep picking it back up. The ending had an nice little twist that I never saw coming. Time to wait for the library to get a copy of the next book, because it's pretty much a to be continued kind of thing. Outstanding in the Rain: A Whole Story With Holes by Frank Viva

Image
Outstanding in the Rain by Frank Viva My rating: 4 of 5 stars I was given a copy of Outstanding in the Rain for review curtsy of Tundra Books. The first thing I noticed when I received my copy was the artwork. I was completely amazed at how beautiful this book is. (I really wish my phone would stop acting up and let me insert some pictures.) The story its self was cute, I loved how it was told with holes in the pages, how after each turn of the page the hole took on a whole new life. I read this out loud to my wee one and she rather enjoyed it finding it cute as we went from hole to hole. One of our favorites would have to be the subway train windows on one page turning into the toothy grin on the boy on the next. Overall the images are the major selling point of this book. Just absolutely lovely. View all my reviews

Eating Habits of the Chronically Lonesome by Megan Gail Coles

Image
Eating Habits of the Chronically Lonesome by Megan Gail Coles My rating: 5 of 5 stars What a wonderful collection of short stories. They will move you to laughter and some will move you to tears, at least that was the case for me. I found myself smiling as I read them because being from Newfoundland myself I could hear the voices of these characters so perfectly in my head. Not all center around Newfoundland or those from there we do have the Russian family recently moved to Canada, a story that made my eyes fill I will admit; But the major them do involve Newfoundland in some form. I noticed that some stories even had connecting characters which is something I found to be neat. I laughed, I cried, I glared, I smiled. I'm happy I read it. View all my reviews

Coventry by Helen Humphreys

Image
Coventry by Helen Humphreys My rating: 4 of 5 stars This story spans both World Wars, and we get to follow the lives of two women and their losses and experiences through out. The bulk of the story is about the Germans air raids on the town of Coventry, the author has done a wonderful job in describing the scenes taking place, the emotions, the sounds. From all this destruction and death a bond of friendship is formed. I love books set during the war, especially WW2, as a history lover I always tend to goble them up if written well, and this one was done very good. View all my reviews

Edge of Time by Susan M. MacDonald

Image
Edge of Time by Susan M. MacDonald My rating: 3 of 5 stars Finished this book last night. We have teenagers with untrained abilities, aliens that are after them, destruction of the cities because of said aliens who are after said teenagers. It is up to the guardians to find and train them but is one gone rogue? Because it seems the "big bad" can find them rather quick or is there another reason. It was alright, it had a few quirky lines that got a smirk out of me. Was it the best YA science fiction novel, nope but you know what it was no where near the worst. I didn't love it but I enjoyed it. What I do love is the fact that I just happened to pick it up at the library knowing nothing about it. Not only that but discovering upon opening it that it written by a local author and published locally as well. There seems to be a hint of more to come in another book, so I think because I did enjoy it I'll look and see if there is abother book in the story. View

You Don't Know Me by David Klass

Image
You Don't Know Me by David Klass My rating: 3 of 5 stars Another book that makes you take step back and think, make you realize that you don't really know people. You see them, you see what they project out to the world but whats going on their inner most thoughts, what goes on when no one is looking, what their lives are really like you don't really know Take for example John, he lives with his mom and her boyfriend, he feels that no one really knows him, his friends who are not really friends, his own mother even. No one knows that this man, who is not his father is cold and mean. No one knows where his real father took off too, or why for that matter he did leaving his mother alone with just a young child to look after. This book centers around the life of John, his thoughts, and his reality. His home that isn't a home, school that isn't a school, it's anti-school. I will admit at first I thought I was going to throw the towel in early on this one b

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

Image
The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins My rating: 4 of 5 stars Have you ever driven by stretches of houses wondering what life was like behind those walls? Now imagine driving past them daily, the stories you can make up in your own mind of the people inside, their lives, even giving them names. What happens when you see something, something that changes how you think of these people. What do you do? What do you do when you don't know who to trust? When everything is lie, or everything is a black hole because you can't bear the reality so you drink away the time, faking the life you live because telling the truth of what really is too hard to face. This book makes you take a look at others, realizing that what you see on the outside isn't always what is. What a page turner, I was constantly wondering and in the dark until the last 50 page or so. I started to think hmm maybe, and it turns out my suspicions were correct. Highly recommend this book. Let it Snow: Three Holiday Romances by John Green

Image
Let it Snow: Three Holiday Romances by John Green My rating: 3 of 5 stars I would have loved to give it a higher rating but the last story of the three didn't hold up to the first two and to be quite honest John Greens was the only one I would have given higher then three stars to. I have to say I enjoyed how all the stories take place in the same town and involving all the same characters but from different points of view and situations. That I found was well executed. It was a cute holiday read and yes I know wrong holiday right now. But hey there's still snow on the ground here and I watched the third season of Glee's Christmas episode last night so it was all fitting. View all my reviews
